A dog-friendly beach, oceanfront hotel, great restaurants and a walkable coastal town made this California getaway one we can’t wait to do again.
We decided to sneak away to Pismo Beach, California, for a quick trip in mid-August—and honestly, Pismo surprised us!
What started as a simple little getaway ended with us already talking about when we could come back.
We’d had our eye on Vespera Resort on Pismo Beach, Autograph Collection for a couple of months, just waiting for the right opportunity to escape. As soon as we arrived, we knew we’d made a good choice.
Dog-friendly hotel? Check.
Beautiful dog-friendly beach right outside? Check.
Restaurants, shops and things to do within walking distance? Check, check and check.
This was exactly the kind of dog-friendly getaway we love—the kind where you can park the car, grab the leash and actually enjoy the vacation with your dog instead of constantly figuring out what to do with your dog.
Pismo gave us the relaxing coastal getaway we needed, and by the time we left, we weren’t wondering if we’d come back.

🐾 Before We Check In: Our Little Dog-Travel Routine
Before we talk about the hotel, here’s something we always do when we’re traveling with our dogs.
Before a hotel stay, our pup gets a fresh bath. We also bring large waterproof blanket throws to protect furniture or beds where dogs are permitted—and, of course, enough poop bags to handle what seems like the needs of an entire dog park. 😂
It’s just part of traveling responsibly with our dogs.
We want hotels to continue welcoming four-legged guests, and we believe we have a responsibility to leave a room just as clean and cared for as we found it.
A dog-friendly hotel is a privilege we definitely don’t want to lose!
Where We Stayed: Dog-Friendly Vespera Resort on Pismo Beach
One of the biggest reasons this getaway worked so well was our hotel.
Vespera Resort on Pismo Beach is part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection, a collection of individual hotels designed to have their own style and connection to their destination.
And this one definitely feels like Pismo.
But more importantly for us?
They didn’t just allow our dog. They made him feel welcome.
There’s a difference.
From the moment we pulled up, we noticed the little things—including a water bowl waiting outside for four-legged guests.
Inside, the staff couldn’t have been warmer or friendlier. There’s even a small gift shop with goodies for dogs, and when we checked in, our pup received his own welcome bag filled with treats.
At this point, we’re pretty sure he thought we’d booked the resort for him.
We didn’t have the heart to tell him otherwise. 😂
Ocean Views, Fire Pits & Plenty of Room for the Pup
We booked a room with a balcony overlooking the ocean, and for us, the view was absolutely worth it.
There’s something pretty wonderful about waking up at the coast, stepping outside and seeing the Pacific right in front of you.
The resort also has fire pits where you can sit back and enjoy the coastal atmosphere, and one of our favorite surprises was the dog-friendly dining right on the property.
More on the food in a minute—because our dog ate surprisingly well on this trip.
We also appreciated how much of Vespera we could enjoy together. The pool and pool deck were the main areas where dogs weren’t permitted during our stay, leaving plenty of other spaces where our pup could join us.
Vespera also offered a variety of complimentary guest activities. One that caught our attention was stargazing, which is a pretty great way to finish a day at the beach.
Ocean nearby. Stars overhead. Dog beside you.
Not a bad way to spend an evening.
Overall, Vespera made our dog feel like a guest rather than an inconvenience, and that’s something we notice when we travel.
Dog-Friendly Pismo Beach: Park the Car and Grab the Leash
One of our favorite things about staying at Vespera was how easy it was to explore Pismo Beach with our dog.
The beach, restaurants, shops and downtown area were all within walking distance, so once we arrived, we hardly needed our car.
We could head out for a walk, grab something to eat, browse a few shops and wander around town—with our pup right there with us.
And if your dog enjoys making new four-legged friends?
They’ll have plenty of opportunities.
There were dogs everywhere!
We found many businesses welcoming to well-behaved dogs, but here’s one of our dog-travel rules:
We always ask first.
Even if Google says yes.
Even if someone online says yes.
Even if we were there before and the answer was yes.
Why?
Because pet policies change.
We experienced that firsthand when we stopped at a coffee shop that was listed online as dog-friendly, only to discover that its policy had recently changed and dogs were no longer allowed inside—even long enough to place an order.
Disappointing? Sure.
But also a good reminder that yesterday’s dog-friendly can become today’s “Sorry, no dogs.”
A quick question before walking in saves everyone an awkward moment.
Dog-Friendly Restaurants in Pismo Beach: Our Pup Ate VERY Well
One of the biggest surprises of our Pismo Beach getaway was the food.
Not just ours.
His. 😂
We found several places where we could enjoy a good meal without leaving our four-legged family member behind.
Two favorites were Ada’s Fish House, a short walk from our hotel, and Pequin Coastal Cocina, located right at Vespera Resort.
Both served excellent food, had welcoming staff and made dining with our dog easy and enjoyable.
Dog-friendly seating was on the outdoor patios during our visits, which is common at restaurants that accommodate dogs. If you’re planning to bring your pup, it’s always a good idea to ask about patio availability when you arrive or make a reservation.
Honestly, we loved eating outside.
We’re at the beach. Why would we want to sit inside anyway?
Apparently, the Dog Ordered From the Good Menu
What really impressed us was the quality of the dog-friendly food.
These didn’t feel like sad little afterthoughts tossed into a bowl just so a restaurant could say it had something for dogs.
The meals prepared for our pup looked so good that we joked we could have eaten them ourselves.
Don’t worry.
We let him have his dinner. 😂
And naturally, no beach getaway is complete without dessert.
We stopped at Pismo Yogurt/Ice Cream, where we could get something sweet for ourselves and pick up a Yoghund frozen treat for our pup.
Everyone wins.
At all three places, we found the staff friendly, welcoming and genuinely helpful—which makes such a difference when you’re traveling with a dog.

🐾 Paws in the Sand: What to Know About Pismo Beach With Your Dog
Of course, we couldn’t stay at an oceanfront hotel without getting those paws onto the beach!
Dogs are welcome on Pismo Beach, which was one of the things that made this getaway so much fun for us.
One important thing to know: Dogs must remain on a leash no longer than six feet while enjoying Pismo Beach. Even if the beach looks quiet and your pup would love a little freedom, resist the temptation to unclip that leash! The leash law is enforceable, and we’d much rather spend our vacation money on a great dinner—or a treat for the pup—than potentially find out what happens when we break the rules. 😂
We also noticed dog-waste bag stations at many of the beach entrances, which was a thoughtful convenience.
That said, we still recommend carrying your own.
Because somehow the moment you don’t bring a poop bag is exactly the moment your dog decides:

Please clean up after your dog. Keeping the beach clean and being considerate of other visitors helps protect our ability to continue enjoying these wonderful places with our pets.

Looking for an Off-Leash Beach?
If your pup needs an opportunity to run without a leash, Olde Port Beach, farther north in the San Luis Obispo area, may be another option worth investigating.
Rules can change, so check the current regulations before heading there specifically for off-leash play.
Dogs are not permitted on Pismo Pier, so that’s one attraction you’ll need to enjoy without your four-legged companion.
And honestly?
With people fishing from the pier and the possibility of hooks and fishing line, we’re perfectly happy keeping curious dog noses and paws away from that situation.
🐾 One More Thing: Check That Sand!
Before your dog heads onto the beach, check the temperature of the sand.
Sand and pavement can become surprisingly hot on sunny days, and your dog doesn’t have the luxury of putting on flip-flops when things get uncomfortable.
We bring our dog’s shoes along just in case. They’re useful when sand, pavement or another walking surface becomes too hot for comfortable paws.
It’s an easy thing to pack and gives us one more option for keeping our pup comfortable while we’re out exploring.
So, Is Pismo Beach Worth Visiting With Your Dog?
For us?
Absolutely.
Between the beautiful coastline, walkable downtown, dog-friendly places to eat and the sheer number of dogs we saw out enjoying Pismo with their people, this little California beach town made traveling with our pup surprisingly easy.
But our favorite part wasn’t one particular restaurant, hotel amenity or beach view.
It was simply being able to vacation together.
We didn’t spend the weekend constantly figuring out who would stay behind with the dog while everyone else went somewhere.
We walked.
We ate.
We explored.
We relaxed.
And our dog came with us.
That’s exactly what we’re looking for when we choose a dog-friendly destination.
So if you’re searching for a dog-friendly California beach getaway where you can enjoy the coast, good food and a walkable town with your four-legged travel buddy, Pismo Beach deserves a spot on your list.

🎒🐾 What We’d Pack for This Adventure
A dog-friendly overnight getaway requires a little more packing than a day at the beach. Apparently, our dogs never got the memo about packing light. 😂
For Pismo Beach, we’d bring our usual dog-travel essentials—things like a good leash, fresh water, poop bags, a towel, paw protection and first-aid supplies—but an overnight trip also means figuring out how to keep all that dog gear organized.
That’s where our two dog-travel bags come in.
🧳 Our Main Dog-Travel Bag — This is where we organize much of the gear we’ll need once we reach our destination, including food, dishes, first-aid supplies and other overnight essentials.

🛏️ A Large Waterproof Blanket — When hotel policy permits our dog on the bed or furniture, we put down a large waterproof blanket first. It helps protect against pet hair, dirty paws, spills and unexpected accidents—and gives our pup a comfortable place to settle in. We make sure it’s large enough to cover the entire surface, because somehow dogs have a remarkable ability to find the one spot you didn’t protect. 😂
These aren’t things you have to buy to travel overnight with your dog. They’re simply part of the system we’ve developed over years of traveling with ours—and anything that keeps us organized, protects the places welcoming our dogs and makes getting everybody from the car to the hotel a little easier is a win in our book. 🐾🧳

🛏️ Our Hotel-Bed Must-Have

When the hotel’s pet policy permits our dog on the bed, we put this waterproof blanket over the bedding to help protect it from pet hair, spills, dirty paws and unexpected accidents.
We prefer the king size for a king-size hotel bed because we want the whole bed protected. Leave one little area uncovered and you can probably guess exactly where the dog will decide to lie. 😂
It’s reversible, but our dogs have voted for the comfy fleece side. We’ve also found that it maintains its waterproof protection through washing when we follow the care instructions.
