And then there are those places that somehow find their way into your heart… and make you start thinking about your next trip before you’ve even left. ❤️
For us, The Westin Monache Resort in Mammoth Lakes is one of those places.
We first stayed at the Westin years ago—before we started traveling with our dog—and loved our experience so much that we knew we wanted to return. So when we discovered that we could bring our four-legged family member along on future trips, it made coming back even better!
Because let’s be honest…
A mountain vacation is pretty amazing.
But a mountain vacation with your dog? Even better! 🐶🏔️
A Cozy Place to Come Home To 🏡
After a day of hiking, exploring, shopping, or simply taking in Mammoth’s incredible scenery, there is something wonderful about knowing you have a comfortable room waiting for you.
Our room had everything we needed to settle in and relax.
We had a king-size bed, comfortable couch, fireplace, and a small kitchen area—giving us plenty of room to spread out and make ourselves at home.
But one of our favorite features was the elevated window lounge.
It was the perfect little place to sit with a cup of coffee, look out at the mountains, and simply enjoy the view.
There’s something special about being surrounded by Mammoth’s beautiful scenery and then coming back to a warm, comfortable room where you can slow down for a while.
After a full day of adventures, we loved kicking off our shoes, relaxing by the fireplace, and enjoying some downtime together.
The hotel even provided bathrobes, which was a fun little touch that made us feel even more comfortable.
For us, the room wasn’t just a place to sleep.
It was part of the vacation.
And our pup seemed to agree! 😂🐾
After a day of adventures, she was perfectly happy to curl up and relax with us.
Honestly, a tired and happy dog curled up after a great day outdoors is one of the best parts of traveling with your furry family member.

The Westin offers several different room layouts and configurations.
If you have something specific in mind and don’t see exactly what you’re looking for online, we recommend giving the hotel a call. There may be room options or details that aren’t immediately obvious when booking online.
For us, having the right room setup made our stay even more enjoyable.
After all, when you’re traveling with a dog, a little extra space can be a very good thing! 🐶😂

Location, Location… Adventure! 🏔️🐾
One of the biggest reasons we love staying at The Westin Monache is its location.
The hotel is just steps from The Village at Mammoth, which puts restaurants, shops and other useful stops within easy reach. We love being able to leave the car parked and walk over to the Village when we want something to eat, need to pick something up, or simply feel like wandering around.
During ski season, the Village Gondola also connects the Village with Canyon Lodge—another reason this location can be so convenient for a Mammoth getaway.
And when you’re traveling with a dog, that kind of convenience matters even more.
Instead of getting everyone back into the car every time you need something, you already have quite a bit within walking distance. For us, that has been one of the things that makes The Westin such an easy home base for exploring Mammoth.

Of course, Mammoth itself is the real adventure. Whether we’re hiking, exploring the Eastern Sierra, enjoying the mountain scenery or simply slowing down for a while, we love having a comfortable place to come back to at the end of the day.
Little Things That Made Traveling With Our Dog Easier 🐶
The Westin has a designated dog-relief area on the back side of the hotel, which we’ve found really convenient when traveling with our dog.
The area has a natural forest-floor surface, along with cleanup bags and hand sanitizer. We always travel with our own supplies, but we still appreciate the hotel providing them.
We’ve stayed here with our dog during the winter when there was snow on the ground, and that’s when we REALLY appreciated having this area so close to the hotel. When it’s cold and snowy outside, being able to walk right out to an appropriate bathroom area makes those late-night and early-morning potty trips much easier.
One thing to know: we’ve found the area fairly dark at night. We travel with a flashlight anyway, so that works well for us, but we’d recommend having one handy for nighttime bathroom breaks.
It’s those practical little things that can make traveling with a dog easier.
And throughout our stays, the staff members we’ve interacted with have been friendly, welcoming and helpful.
Most importantly, we’ve felt like our dog was genuinely welcome—not like she was simply being tolerated because the hotel had a pet policy.
And as dog parents, that makes a difference. ❤️🐾

Planning Activities Without Your Dog 🐾
One important thing to consider when planning your Mammoth trip is that the hotel’s current policy does not allow dogs to be left unattended in guest rooms.
That may not matter if you’re planning a trip filled with activities your dog can enjoy with you. But if everyone in your group wants to ski, snowboard or do something else where your dog can’t come along, you’ll need to make an appropriate care plan ahead of time.
Fortunately, Mammoth offers so many outdoor adventures that when we’re traveling there with our dog, we’re usually looking for reasons to bring our pup along—not leave them behind!

For us, The Westin Monache has become one of those places that feels familiar in the best possible way.
We’ve enjoyed staying there without our dog.
We’ve enjoyed staying there with our dog.
And we would happily return again.
The combination of comfortable accommodations, beautiful mountain scenery, a convenient location, thoughtful dog-friendly amenities and a welcoming atmosphere makes it a place we genuinely enjoy.

For us, the combination of excellent dog access, a convenient relief area, welcoming staff, comfortable rooms and a location right by The Village at Mammoth makes it particularly well suited to the kind of Mammoth getaway we enjoy.

A Quick Note About Mammoth 🏔️
You may hear this beautiful mountain area called several different names while planning your trip.
The official town name is Mammoth Lakes, but locals and visitors often simply call it Mammoth.
You’ll also hear Mammoth Mountain, especially when people are talking about the ski resort and mountain activities.
So if you see us using Mammoth, Mammoth Lakes, or Mammoth Mountain throughout our blog, don’t worry—we’re not talking about three completely different places! 😂 It’s all the same place.
They’re all names you’ll commonly hear while exploring this beautiful mountain destination.
