Then Ventura Harbor Village might be the perfect place to start your dog-friendly Ventura adventure!
The harbor has a variety of restaurants, including dog-friendly patio seating at select locations, along with fun little shops to explore. Since individual businesses can have their own pet policies, we always recommend asking before bringing your pup inside.
And honestly, sometimes it’s just nice to slow down and enjoy the view.
Not in the mood to shop or eat?
No problem!
Watching the boats come and go, enjoying the harbor scenery and doing a little people-watching can be just as entertaining.
Sometimes the best part of an adventure is simply sitting back and enjoying where you are.
Our Suggestion? 😋
Start with a bite to eat, take a stroll around the harbor and then—because day trips should always include something delicious—stop for a treat!
One of our favorites is Coastal Cone.
Not only can the humans find something delicious, but we’ve also found frozen treats for dogs during our visits.
Because let’s be honest…
If you’re sitting there enjoying something special, your dog is probably looking at you thinking:
“Excuse me… I believe you forgot someone.” 😂🐶🍦
And they’re probably right.
#2: Harbor Cove Beach—Sand, Surf & Happy Dogs! 🐶🏖️
After enjoying the harbor, it’s time to head toward the ocean!
Want to dig your toes into the sand, listen to the Pacific Ocean, play some volleyball or simply hang out on the beach with your dog?
Then dog-friendly Harbor Cove Beach is definitely worth checking out.
Located at the end of Ventura Harbor, Harbor Cove Beach may not be huge, but that’s part of its charm. Tucked alongside the harbor jetty, it has a more protected setting than Ventura’s open-ocean beaches and can make for a wonderfully relaxing second half of your day.
And the best part for us?
Our dog gets to come, too.
🐾 An Important Paws-Up Before You Hit the Sand
Dogs are permitted in designated areas around Ventura Harbor, but they need to remain on a leash, and posted restrictions should always be followed.
We also recommend checking the current rules when you arrive. Beach and pet regulations can change, and signs posted at the beach should always take priority over something you—or we!—read online before the trip.
And of course…
Please pick up after your pup.
Dog-friendly beaches are special, and there simply aren’t enough of them. Being responsible dog travelers helps keep places like this welcoming to our four-legged family members.
🌊 A Word About the Water
Harbor Cove has a more protected location, but remember that you’re still visiting the coast.
Ocean conditions can change, and tides, currents and waves should always be taken seriously—whether it’s you or your dog thinking about getting into the water.
Check conditions and posted warnings when you arrive, keep your dog under control near the water and never assume that calm-looking water means there are no hazards.
And if the waves are looking a little too enthusiastic?
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with staying on the sand.

While you’re exploring the area, see if you can spot the two mermaid statues.
One is playing a flute and the other is playing a cello.
Consider it a little beach scavenger hunt!

🐾 A Few Tips From Our Visits
Want fewer crowds? Try visiting during the off-season.
Don’t mind sharing the beach? Summer is beautiful—but expect more people.
Going on a busy day? Get there earlier. Parking lots can fill during warmer months and busy weekends.
Bring a leash. Dogs need to remain leashed in permitted Ventura Harbor areas, and always pay attention to posted signs and current regulations.
Bring your own poop bags. Even if bags happen to be available somewhere, we never count on it.
Bring water for your dog. Beach adventures can make thirsty pups!
And one more thing…
Know where you’re parking.
Ventura Harbor’s parking rules have changed since some of our earlier visits.
Parking at Ventura Harbor Village and Harbor Cove Beach is currently free Monday through Thursday, except major holidays.
On Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and major holidays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., paid parking is currently $1 per hour for up to four hours or $10 for a longer stay.
Here’s something especially helpful if you’re following our little Ventura itinerary:
You don’t have to pay twice.
If you pay for parking at the Village or beach, that payment covers your visit in both participating lots, so you can move your vehicle between Ventura Harbor Village and Harbor Cove Beach without starting over.
There are also free parking options available along designated areas of Spinnaker Drive and at the Dolphin Lot.
Parking rules and rates can always change, so check Ventura Harbor’s current parking information before your visit.

🎒🐾 What We’d Pack for This Adventure
A little preparation can make a day at the harbor and beach much easier—especially when your travel buddy has four legs and can’t exactly pack their own bag. 😂
Here are a few things we’d bring along for a dog-friendly day at Ventura Harbor and Harbor Cove Beach:
🦮 A Good Leash — Dogs need to remain leashed in permitted areas around Ventura Harbor, so this one is definitely making the bag.
💧 Portable Water Bowl & Fresh Water — Beach walks, sunshine and exploring can make for one thirsty pup.
💩 Poop Bags — We never count on finding them when we need them. Bringing our own is one of those little things that helps keep dog-friendly places dog-friendly.
🏖️ Dog Beach Towel — Because somehow our dogs can still manage to bring half the beach and water back to the car if we don’t use this towel. 😂
🚿 Portable Dog Shower — A quick rinse of paws, legs and other sandy parts before getting back into the car can save you from bringing quite as much of the beach home with you.
🐾 Paw Protection — Sand and pavement can get hot. Depending on the weather and your dog’s needs, protective dog shoes or other paw protection may be worth packing.
These aren’t things you have to buy for a great day. They’re simply the items we find useful and would consider bringing to make the adventure a little easier.
