We decided to take a quick trip to Pismo Beach in mid-August, and it completely exceeded our expectations! What started as a simple getaway left us already talking about when we could come back.
We had been eyeing the Marriott Autograph Collection’s Vespera Resort for a couple of months, just waiting for the right opportunity to escape. As soon as we arrived, we knew we had made the right choice. The resort checked every box on our list—especially for traveling with our dog. It’s dog-friendly, located right on a beautiful dog-friendly beach, and surrounded by dog-friendly restaurants, shops, and activities that are all within walking distance.
It was the perfect combination of a relaxing beach vacation and a place where our whole family—including our four-legged member—could truly enjoy the experience. Pismo gave us exactly the quick getaway we needed, and now we’re already looking forward to our next visit!
A little note when we travel with our pup: Before heading to a hotel, we always make sure our dog has had a fresh bath and is clean. We also come prepared with large, waterproof blanket throws to protect any furniture or beds where dogs are allowed. And, of course, we never leave home without plenty of doggy poop bags!
We believe being a responsible pet parent means leaving the hotel just as clean and cared for as we found it—and making sure our pup is a welcome guest wherever we go.
The Hotel – Vespera Resort on Pismo Beach
A Little Background on Vespera Resort
Vespera Resort on Pismo Beach is part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection, a group of independently owned and operated hotels known for their individual style, personality, and connection to the destination. Rather than feeling like a typical chain hotel, each property is designed to have its own character and sense of place.
From the moment we pulled up to Vespera, it was clear that dogs are genuinely welcome here. We immediately noticed a water bowl waiting outside for four-legged guests, which was such a thoughtful touch. When we walked through the doors, we were greeted by a warm and friendly staff who made us—and our pup—feel right at home.
Even the little details made a difference. The resort has a small gift shop with items specifically for dogs, and when we checked in, our pup received his very own welcome bag filled with treats. Needless to say, he was pretty happy with the hotel!
We booked a room with a balcony overlooking the ocean, and the view was absolutely worth it. There are also fire pits on the property where you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the coastal atmosphere. One of our favorite features was the dog-friendly restaurant, which offered delicious, high-quality food for both us and our pup.
Another thing we appreciated was how much of the resort is accessible to dogs. The pool and pool deck are the only areas where dogs aren’t permitted, so there are still plenty of places throughout the property where you can enjoy your stay together.
One of the things we really enjoyed about Vespera was the variety of complimentary activities offered to guests. There’s always something to do if you want to take a break from the beach or simply enjoy the resort without having to spend extra money. One of the highlights is stargazing, which is such a fun way to wind down after a day in Pismo Beach. With the ocean nearby and the evening sky overhead, it makes for a pretty special experience.
Overall, Vespera does a wonderful job of making dogs feel like welcome guests rather than an afterthought—and for us, that made the experience even more special.
A Town That Welcomes Dogs
One of the best things about staying at Vespera is how easy it is to explore Pismo Beach with your dog. With shops, restaurants, and the beach all within walking distance, we hardly needed to get in the car. We loved being able to head out for a walk, grab something to eat, browse the shops, and enjoy the town together. And if your dog loves meeting new friends, they’ll fit right in—there were dogs everywhere we went!
We found that many of the shops and restaurants welcomed well-behaved dogs, but we always asked before bringing our pup inside. We never assume a business is dog-friendly, even when we’ve heard that it is. Policies can change, and we actually experienced this firsthand. We visited a coffee shop that was listed online as dog-friendly, only to find out that they had recently changed their policy and no longer allowed dogs inside, even for a quick order. It was disappointing, but it was also a good reminder to always check first.
A Few of Our Favorite Places to Eat
One of the things that really surprised us about Pismo Beach was the quality of the food—not just for us, but for our pup too! We found several great places to eat, and it was wonderful being able to enjoy delicious meals without having to leave our four-legged family member behind.
A few of our favorites were Ada’s Fish House, just a short walk from the hotel, and Pequin Coastal Cocina, conveniently located right at Vespera Resort. Both offered excellent food and made dining with our dog easy and enjoyable. One thing to keep in mind when dining with your pup: the dog-friendly seating at these restaurants is located in the outdoor patio areas. This is pretty common for dog-friendly restaurants, so if you’re planning to bring your dog along for a meal, be sure to request or choose patio seating.
We actually enjoyed eating outside—it made the experience feel even more relaxed and gave our pup the chance to be right there with us while we enjoyed our meal.
And, of course, you can’t forget dessert! We stopped at Pismo Yogurt/Ice Cream, where you can treat yourself to something sweet and even pick up a Yoghund frozen treat for your pup!
What impressed us most was the quality of the dog-friendly food options. At both restaurants, the meals prepared for our pup looked so good that we honestly could have eaten them ourselves! It was clear that these weren’t just an afterthought or a bowl of plain food—they were thoughtfully prepared meals that made our dog feel like part of the dining experience.
At all three places, the staff were absolutely wonderful—so friendly, welcoming, and genuinely helpful.

Paws in the Sand: Enjoying Pismo Beach With Your Dog…What To Know

Dogs are welcome on Pismo Beach as long as they are kept on a leash six feet or shorter. We noticed doggy waste-bag stations at many of the entrances to the beach, which was a nice convenience, although we always recommend bringing your own bags just in case. And please remember to use them—keeping the beach clean helps make it possible for dogs and their people to continue enjoying it together.
One important thing to know: dogs are not allowed off-leash on Pismo Beach, even if the beach looks quiet or nearly empty. We’ve read that police and park rangers do enforce the leash rule and can issue costly tickets, so it’s definitely not worth the risk.
If your pup needs some off-leash time, there’s another great option a little farther north. Olde Port Beach in the San Luis Obispo area allows dogs off-leash under voice control, all day, every day. It’s a great spot to let your dog run, explore, and burn off some energy.
Dogs are also not allowed on the Pismo Pier. Honestly, we think this makes sense, especially with people fishing from the pier and the potential danger of hooks or fishing line for curious dogs.
A Note of Caution
Before letting your pup head out onto the sand, always check the temperature first. Sand can become surprisingly hot, especially on sunny summer days, and can cause painful burns to your dog’s paw pads.
We always bring our dog’s shoes with us, just in case. They’re especially helpful when the sand, pavement, or another walking surface becomes too hot for her paws. It’s a simple precaution, but one that gives us peace of mind and allows our pup to enjoy the day safely with us.
Our Final Thoughts
Overall, our experience exploring Pismo with our dog was wonderful. Between the beautiful beach, walkable downtown, dog-friendly businesses, and all the other dogs we encountered along the way, it was easy to see why Pismo is such a great destination for dog lovers.
For us, the best part was being able to enjoy the vacation together. We didn’t have to leave our pup behind while we went shopping, grabbed a bite to eat, or walked along the beach. Pismo made it easy to include our dog in the experience—and that’s exactly what we look for when choosing a getaway.
If you’re looking for a place where you and your dog can relax, explore, eat, and enjoy the beach together, Pismo Beach is definitely worth putting on your list.
