When I was a kid, one of my favorite things about visiting National Parks was becoming a Junior Ranger. There was something exciting about learning about the park, completing activities, and officially earning that special title.
So imagine our excitement when we discovered that our dog could have her own version of the experience!
Enter the B.A.R.K. Ranger program. 🐶🐾
Yep… our dog could become a B.A.R.K. Ranger!
Needless to say, we were pretty excited.
Our First B.A.R.K. Ranger Adventure 🐾
When we arrived at Bryce Canyon National Park, we headed to the visitor center to find out more about the program.
We spoke with a ranger, and I have to say that every ranger we met during our trip was incredibly friendly and helpful. But the ranger who helped us with the B.A.R.K. Ranger program went above and beyond to make the experience special.
After completing the activities we needed to do with our dog, it was finally time…
🥁 DRUM ROLL, PLEASE… 🥁
Our dog was officially sworn in as a B.A.R.K. Ranger! 🎉🐶
Yes, there was a little ceremony.
Yes, it made us ridiculously happy.
And yes… our dog was especially thrilled because the ceremony included a free doggy treat from the ranger! 😂
We were also given a card explaining the program, with a special place to add our dog’s name and make her new B.A.R.K. Ranger status official.
Of course, we couldn’t stop there!
After the ceremony, we headed to the gift shop, where we purchased her first B.A.R.K. Ranger patch.
And just like that, a new travel goal was born:
How Many National Parks Can Our Dog Become a B.A.R.K. Ranger In? 🐾🏞️
We have officially started a new adventure mission—to see how many participating National Park Service sites we can visit where our dog can earn B.A.R.K. Ranger status.
Patch collecting has become part of the fun, and honestly, it gives us another great excuse to keep exploring!
So… What Exactly Is a B.A.R.K. Ranger? 🐶
The National Park Service’s B.A.R.K. Ranger program encourages people and their pets to enjoy parks responsibly. The program is designed to help pet owners understand how to protect park resources, wildlife, other visitors, and their own pets while enjoying National Park Service lands.
And the best part?
The rules are easy to remember because they’re all built right into the name:
B.A.R.K. 🐾
B = Bag Your Dog’s Waste 💩
Nobody wants to step in it—and more importantly, pet waste can affect park ecosystems and wildlife.
Bring bags, pick it up, and dispose of it properly.
Easy enough!
A = Always Leash Your Pet 🦮
Even the best-trained dog can react differently in a new environment.
Keeping your dog leashed helps protect your pup, wildlife, and other visitors. Leash requirements can vary, so always check the current pet rules for the specific park you’re visiting.
R = Respect Wildlife 🦌
This is wildlife’s home—we’re just lucky enough to visit!
Dogs can frighten, chase, or disturb animals, so give wildlife plenty of space and enjoy watching from a safe distance.
Your dog might really want to investigate that squirrel…
But the squirrel probably did not invite them. 😂
K = Know Where You Can Go 🗺️
This one is especially important!
Pet rules can vary significantly from one National Park Service site to another. Dogs may be welcome in certain outdoor areas but restricted from trails, buildings, visitor centers, or other locations.

Every Park Does Things a Little Differently 🐾
One important thing we learned is that not every National Park Service site has a B.A.R.K. Ranger program.
And even among participating parks, the experience can be different.
Some parks have an activity card to complete. Others may have a pledge, a ranger-led swearing-in, a certificate, a tag, a patch, or another special keepsake. Some programs are free, while certain souvenirs may be available for purchase.
That’s part of what makes collecting B.A.R.K. Ranger experiences so much fun!
Our advice?
If becoming a B.A.R.K. Ranger is on your dog’s vacation bucket list, check the specific park’s website or contact the park before you go.
That way, you can find out:
- Whether the park currently offers the program
- Where you need to start
- Whether there are activities to complete
- What areas your dog is allowed to visit
- Whether a ranger ceremony or special item is available
Because nobody wants to arrive with an excited dog only to discover the program isn’t currently available! 😂🐶
More Than a Fun Patch 🐾❤️
One thing we really appreciate about the B.A.R.K. Ranger program is that it’s about more than earning a title.
When you and your dog participate, you’re making a commitment to be responsible visitors and good examples for other pet owners.
Being a B.A.R.K. Ranger doesn’t give your dog special access to areas where pets aren’t allowed.
Instead, it means you and your four-legged adventure buddy are agreeing to follow the rules and help protect these incredible places for everyone—including future generations and future furry visitors.
And honestly, we think that’s pretty special.

But most importantly, you and your dog will be learning how to explore these beautiful places responsibly—while having a lot of fun together.
For us, our first B.A.R.K. Ranger experience brought back wonderful memories of becoming a Junior Ranger as a kid.

I wasn’t the one earning the title.
My dog was. 😂🐾
And judging by how excited she was about that free treat, we think she took her new job very seriously!
