🐶 Dog-Friendly? Yes! Posted signage during our visits has instructed visitors to keep dogs leashed, so that’s the rule we follow at Lookout Park and Summerland Beach. Always check current posted rules when you arrive.

🚗 Parking: Free parking is available at Lookout Park.
🚻 Restrooms: Yes—located up at Lookout Park.
🚿 Our Favorite Extra: The self-service dog wash! There is a fee, but we’ve used it and loved being able to rinse the dogs before getting back into the car. 😂
🐾 Beach Access: A paved trail leads from Lookout Park down to Summerland Beach. Keep in mind that the walk back up can feel a little steep.
🚗 Road-Trip Bonus: Lookout Park is also a handy place to stop, stretch everyone’s legs and take a potty break when traveling farther up the California coast.
⚠️ Good to Know: Check the tides before you go! At higher tides, much of Summerland Beach can disappear under the water, leaving only a small sliver of sand to enjoy. If you’re coming specifically for beach time with your dog, checking the tide forecast before leaving home can make a big difference.

A Dog Beach With a Dog Wash? Yes, Please! 😂🐾
Let’s be honest: a fun day at the beach usually means one thing—SAND EVERYWHERE.
In their paws. In their fur. In the car. Somehow in places you didn’t even know sand could reach. 😂
That’s why we love the dog wash at Lookout Park!
There is a fee to use it, but we’ve personally used it, and in our opinion, it was worth every penny.
And here’s something we noticed on the dog-wash sign that made us like it even more:
“Proceeds from this dog wash are used to maintain County facilities like Lookout Park!”
So while we’re rinsing some of the beach off our dogs before putting them back in the car, we’re also helping support the County facilities we’re there enjoying. That’s a pretty good deal in our book. 🐶🚿
After watching our dogs have the time of their lives enjoying the beach, being able to rinse off all that sand before heading home is a huge bonus.
Happy dogs + less sand in the car = a win in our book!
Getting Down to Summerland Beach 🌊
Summerland Beach sits below the bluff where Lookout Park is located. A paved trail leads from the park down toward the beach.
The trail is wide and relatively easy to follow, but it can be a little steep—especially when you’re heading back up—so keep that in mind if anyone in your group has difficulty walking.
Our dogs have an absolute blast here, and honestly, watching them enjoy the sand and ocean air is part of what makes the trip so much fun for us.
Of course, what goes down must eventually come back up.
Preferably with tired dogs. 😂🐶
🌊 Check the Tides Before You Go!
This is one tip we definitely don’t want you to miss: check the tides before heading to Summerland Beach.
We’ve been here when the tide was higher, and there can be surprisingly little beach left—sometimes just a sliver of sand between the bluff and the water.
If you’re planning your trip specifically so your dog can enjoy some beach time, checking the tide forecast before you leave can save you from arriving ready for a big sandy adventure only to discover that Mother Nature forgot to leave you much sand. 😂🌊
We prefer visiting when the tide gives us more room to spread out and enjoy the beach with our dogs.
🐾 Our Tip: Check the tide forecast before heading out and plan your beach time accordingly. Ocean conditions can change, too, so always pay attention to the water once you’re there.

🦮 A Note About Dogs & Leashes
Here’s where we always let the signs at the destination make the decision for us.
During our visits, we’ve seen posted signage instructing visitors to keep dogs leashed. Because of that, we keep our dogs leashed both at Lookout Park and while we’re enjoying Summerland Beach.
Rules and conditions can change, so we always recommend checking the posted signs when you arrive rather than relying solely on something you read online—including us!
We love finding places where our dogs are welcome, and following the rules is one small way we can help keep dog-friendly destinations enjoyable for everyone. 🐾
🚗🐾 Not Staying for the Beach? It’s Still a Great Dog-Travel Stop
Here’s another reason we like knowing about Lookout Park: you don’t necessarily have to make a full beach day out of it.
We’ve also used Summerland as a stop when we’re traveling farther up the California coast toward places like Buellton and Solvang.
Lookout Park gives everyone a chance to get out of the car, stretch their legs and take a potty break.
And when we say everyone, we mean the humans, too. 😂
With restrooms at the park, space to walk the dogs and beautiful ocean views, it’s a much nicer way to break up a longer drive than simply pulling into the nearest gas station.
So whether Summerland Beach is your destination or Lookout Park is just a stop along the way, it’s one of those places we’re happy to have on our dog-travel map. 🐶🚗🌊
A Few Friendly Reminders 🐾
As much as we love dog-friendly places, we also know that keeping them available for everyone means doing our part!
💩 Bring poop bags and clean up after your dog. Please dispose of waste properly in a trash can. Keeping these beautiful places clean and healthy helps ensure everyone—including our dogs—can continue enjoying them.
🐕 Give other people and dogs space. Even at a dog-friendly beach, not everyone wants to interact with every dog they see. Some people may be afraid of dogs, have allergies or simply prefer a little personal space.
🐾 Keep an eye on your dog and be respectful of others. Beach conditions can change, too, so watch where your pup is walking and give those paws a quick check before getting back into the car.
A little consideration goes a long way toward making dog-friendly places enjoyable for everyone.
One of Our Favorite Dog-Friendly Beach Stops ❤️
We really enjoy visiting Summerland Beach at Lookout Park.
Between the beautiful views, beach fun, convenient parking, restrooms and that awesome dog wash, it has become one of our favorite places to enjoy a coastal adventure with our dogs.
And we love that it doesn’t necessarily have to be the destination.
Sometimes it’s the beach day.
Sometimes it’s the stop along the way.
Sometimes everybody in the car just needs a potty break. 😂🐶🚗

🎒🐾 What We’d Pack for This Adventure
A beach day doesn’t require bringing the entire dog-travel closet—although somehow our dogs seem to think it should. 😂
For a day at Summerland Beach, we’d keep things pretty simple:
🦮 A Good Leash — Posted signage during our visits has instructed visitors to keep dogs leashed, so this one definitely comes with us.
💧 Fresh Water & a Portable Dog Bowl — Between the beach, sunshine and exploring, we always make sure our dogs have access to fresh water.
💩 Poop Bags — We never count on finding them when we need them. Bringing our own is one of those little things that helps keep dog-friendly places dog-friendly.
🐶 A Dog Towel — Because even with that wonderful dog wash, somebody still has to dry the dog before the dog gets into the car. 😂
🚿 A Portable Paw Rinse — Lookout Park has its own dog wash, which we love, but we still keep a portable rinse in our travel gear for beach trips and other sandy or muddy stops along the way.
These aren’t things you have to buy for a great beach day. They’re simply the items we find useful and would consider bringing to make the adventure a little easier.

Kurgo Mud Dog Travel Shower — This simple little attachment turns an ordinary plastic water bottle into a portable dog shower. We mainly use ours to rinse sandy or muddy paws after beaches and hikes before everybody climbs back into the car.
Yes, Lookout Park already has that wonderful dog wash! We still keep this little attachment in our travel gear because it’s handy at beaches and other stops where a dog wash isn’t waiting for us.
