That’s exactly why we enjoy visiting Butterfly Beach in Montecito, just south of Santa Barbara.
Butterfly Beach isn’t a big, amenities-filled beach where we’d necessarily plan an entire day. It’s a simple little stretch of coastline that we enjoy visiting with our dogs—and when we combine it with breakfast or bakery treats from one of our favorite Montecito stops, Jeannine’s Restaurant & Bakery, it makes for a wonderfully easy dog-friendly outing.

🚗 Parking: Limited street parking is available around the beach. We’ve found parking along Channel Drive and Butterfly Lane, but availability can vary. Always pay attention to posted parking signs.

☂️ Shade: Don’t count on finding it. If we’re staying at the beach for a couple of hours, we always bring an SPF-rated beach umbrella or another source of shade so our dogs have a protected place to relax with us.
🌊 VERY Important: Check the tides before you go! At high tide, there may be very little usable beach left. We’ve learned this one firsthand. 😂

🌊 Butterfly Beach: Small, Simple & Worth a Stop
Butterfly Beach isn’t one of those beaches where you arrive to a giant parking lot, restrooms, showers and everything you could possibly need.
Actually, it’s pretty much the opposite. 😂
There are no public restrooms, showers or concessions at the beach, so come prepared. We bring our own water for the dogs and humans, along with whatever else we’ll need while we’re there.
There are two sets of stairs leading down toward the beach, and parking can be limited. We’ve found street parking along Channel Drive and Butterfly Lane, but this isn’t somewhere we’d arrive expecting a giant beach parking lot with spaces waiting for us.
That’s part of why we think Butterfly Beach works particularly well as a shorter dog-friendly adventure rather than an all-day beach destination.
🌊 Check the Tides Before You Go—Seriously!
Remember what we just told you about checking the tides before visiting Summerland Beach?
Well…
We learned that lesson at Butterfly Beach, too. 😂
We once arrived without realizing it was high tide and discovered that the beach we had come to visit had pretty much disappeared.
There was only a tiny amount of usable sand left.
Apparently the Pacific Ocean had other plans for our beach day. 😂🌊
So if walking on the sand with your dog is the reason you’re coming, check the tide forecast before you leave home.
The amount of usable beach can change considerably with the tide, and a quick check beforehand may save you from arriving with an excited dog only to discover there’s hardly any beach available.

🧺🐾 Pack What You Need—or Pick Up Something Delicious on the Way!
Butterfly Beach is beautiful, but this isn’t a beach where you’ll find restrooms, food stands, water fountains or other conveniences waiting for you.
Plan to bring what you and your dog will need while you’re there.
For us, that means fresh water for the dogs and humans, a portable dog bowl, poop bags and whatever food or snacks we’ll want during our visit.
And if we’re planning to stay for a couple of hours, there’s something else that always comes with us:
☂️ Shade for the dogs.
We bring an SPF-rated beach umbrella or another source of shade so our dogs have a protected place to settle down and relax with us.
We don’t want them spending a couple of hours sitting out in direct sun, and because Butterfly Beach doesn’t have amenities or shade structures to rely on, we plan to bring our own.
Of course, we still pay attention to the weather, sand temperature and how our dogs are doing throughout the visit. Having an umbrella doesn’t mean we’re automatically staying if conditions aren’t comfortable for them.

One of the fun ways to turn this into an easy Montecito morning is to stop at Jeannine’s Restaurant & Bakery and pick up breakfast, coffee or a few bakery treats to take with you.
Then head to the beach, find a spot in the sand and enjoy breakfast with an ocean view while your pup hangs out beside you.
Whatever we bring with us, we’re prepared to pack it back out if needed. It’s one of those simple habits that helps keep beautiful dog-friendly places clean for everyone—including the pups who visit after us. 🐾
And don’t forget plenty of fresh water for your dog.

A trip to Montecito gives us another excuse to visit Jeannine’s Restaurant & Bakery on Coast Village Road.
And we’re perfectly okay with that. 😂
Jeannine’s has several locations, but the Montecito location is the one we’ve personally visited, so that’s the one we’re talking about here.
It’s a family-owned Santa Barbara-area business, and we’ve always found the food fresh and delicious and the staff incredibly nice.
And if you happen to love a good Eggs Benedict…
So do I. 😂🍳
Theirs has definitely not disappointed me.
🥐 Don’t Ignore That Bakery Case
Jeannine’s is also known for its bakery items, and here’s our advice:
Don’t wait too long to decide what you want.
Popular baked goods can disappear, and we’ve learned that this is one of those places where you may walk in planning to have breakfast and walk out carrying a bag of baked goods for later.
We consider that excellent planning. 😂🥐
The Montecito location is currently open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., but hours can change, so check before heading over.
And if the restaurant is particularly busy, don’t forget that grabbing bakery items to go is always an option.
🐕 Yep, Our Dogs Get a Treat, Too!
During our visits, Jeannine’s has offered house-made dog treats/biscuits, which our dogs have been very happy to taste-test on our behalf. 🐶
This actually works wonderfully for the way we travel.
Because this is a day trip and our dogs may spend quite a bit of time riding in the car, we don’t necessarily want to give them a big meal in the middle of the adventure.
A small dog treat?
Much more our speed.
Of course, treats and offerings can change, so we wouldn’t promise your pup that a biscuit will be waiting.
Dogs can hold a grudge when promised snacks don’t materialize. 😂
🐾 Dining With Your Dog at Jeannine’s
When we’ve visited, dogs have been welcome in the outdoor patio seating area.
And those seats can go quickly.
If you’re traveling with another person, we’ve found it helpful for one person to handle ordering while the other gets settled outside with the dog when seating is available.
Jeannine’s is first-come, first-served and doesn’t take reservations, so busy days can mean a wait.
Our preference?
Go earlier rather than later if you can.
If it’s packed and you’re not in the mood to wait, grab something delicious from the bakery and turn it into a to-go stop instead.
Because sometimes there’s a very fine line between “We’re patiently waiting for brunch” and “We’re hungry and somebody needs to give us a pastry immediately.” 😂

🛍️ What About Exploring Montecito With Your Dog?
We’ve heard about other dog-friendly places to eat and shop around Montecito, and we’d love to explore more of them on future visits.
But we’re not going to pretend we’ve tested something we haven’t.
Our dogs aren’t particularly interested in shopping.
Apparently nobody has told them that Montecito has some very nice stores. 😂🐶🛍️
For now, our version of a dog-friendly Montecito adventure tends to be pretty simple:
Beach. Food. Dog treat. Happy humans. Happy dogs.
And honestly?
We’re completely okay with that.
⭐ And About Those Famous Montecito Residents…
Montecito is known for having some rather famous residents and visitors.
So if you’re walking along the beach or through town and find yourself thinking…
“Wait a minute. Is that…?”
It very well might be. 😂
But our philosophy is simple: they’re enjoying their day just like we are.
So we give people their space, don’t make a big deal out of it and continue enjoying our own adventure.
Besides, our dogs are generally much more interested in figuring out who has the treats. 🐶😂
❤️ Would We Go Back?
We don’t have to wonder about this one.
We already have. Several times.
Butterfly Beach isn’t the biggest or most amenity-filled dog-friendly beach we’ve visited—and that’s okay.
It’s a pretty little beach that works wonderfully for a shorter outing, especially when we pair it with something delicious from Jeannine’s.
Just remember:
Check the tides. Bring your own water and shade. Don’t count on finding a restroom. And don’t leave Jeannine’s without at least considering something from that bakery case. 😂🐾🥐🌊
